  Beautifully presented rooms that are quiet and really clean. Friendly and hugely helpful staff, and the two most gorgeous dogs!

  Great stay, on a quiet street, lovely owners and receptionist. Monte Sol is a great guest house run by a very nice family. We stayed twice during Christmas and New Year's Eve, in different rooms. Both the first room with a private bathroom and the room with shared bathroom were great. The rooms, the shared bathroom and the common area were always clean. The guest house is located near the town centre on a quiet street, far from the main road so we didn't hear any car or truck noise and had a good night sleep. The tap water in Puerto Viejo is not drinkable, so we appreciated Monte Sol provides filtered water for guests. Great place to stay and good value for money. We can highly recommend Monte Sol!

  Positives: Host and family were friendly and kind. Clean and grounds were aesthetically pleasing. Had hot water in shower. Was able to see some wildlife on grounds including hummingbirds and various small reptiles. Rooms had mosquito nets and fans. Area was quiet. Owner had 3 pets on the premises: an older dog, a younger dog, and a cat. All were very friendly and some nights cat would try to sleep in room. Owner lives on premises. Negatives: Not an actual hostel and is a series of private rooms. Stayed in upstairs room which was extremely hot even with fan. No social scene at all in common area and could be very boring. Place had a large common area with a large kitchen with a bar and a large amount of seating. Kitchen was not available to guests and no food or drinks for that matter were offered to guests. Place had a weird vibe and owner and family/friends used common area and kitchen as their personal kitchen and hang out area. This was generally fine but the space was highly underutilized and kind of disappointing.
