I had the best time staying at this wonderful hostel. A great environment for a solo traveller and by far my favourite hostel on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The owner goes out of his way to make it feel like home. The open common area makes it certain you'll get to know everyone staying at Kalunai. It's very clean and a sand free zone which I appreciated. There are a number of private rooms which I prefer. Laundry is easy. Can't wait to return.

Great hostel with a great staff and good rooms or dorms. The cleaning is good and happens daily. The atmosphere is very welcoming from the moment you step in, and Giannis makes you feel at peace and at home. I highly recommend Kalunai !

Such a lovely place to stay! Next to the jungle, so no noice from passing cars etc in town. And with some luck you can even hear the howling monkeys here. Very friendly hosts, and very clean dorms. I would definitely recommend this place!

By far the nicest hostel we stayed in travelling Costa Rica: if you are visiting Puerto Viejo you must stay here. The atmosphere is amazing - the owner, Giannis is incredibly welcoming and a real joker, as is Carolina, and really does make you feel a part of his extended family. He cooked lovely food every other night ($6-7.5) so you can eat and chat with everyone else staying, if you want. The kitchen is very clean has everything needed, as are the rooms and the bathrooms. The social area is super chilled with hammocks and seating and there was always someone around for a chat. There is also bike rental ($6).
